Machined optics – custom metallic mirrors
High-performance custom metallic mirrors engineered in Denmark
Millpond Optics is a leading provider of machined optics, specializing in Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) and deterministic CNC processing. We manufacture custom metallic mirrors to your specifications with reliability and precision.
From our facility in Denmark, we empower engineers to move beyond the constraints of traditional glass optics by delivering machined metallic mirrors with integrated mechanical features. By leveraging CNC-controlled diamond processing, we produce optical components that offer fractional wavelength accuracy and “snap-together” alignment for the most demanding aerospace, defense, and industrial environments.
We excel at custom-machined aspheric mirrors and off-axis parabolic mirrors, among other shapes.

The advantages of machined optics
1. Superior cost-effectiveness for complex geometries
For engineers working with small-to-medium batches or prototyping, machined metal optics offer a significant cost advantage over traditional glass. While glass grinding and polishing are labor-intensive and often require expensive custom tooling for aspheres or off-axis shapes, our deterministic CNC diamond turning requires no upfront tooling costs. By removing the need for multiple specialized polishing stages and reducing lead times, we provide a more economical path from design to finished component – especially for aspheric mirrors and complex freeform optics where glass fabrication costs often become prohibitive.
2. Monolithic design and ‘snap-together’ alignment
Traditional optical assemblies often struggle with complex mounting and manual alignment. With machined optics, we integrate the optical surface and the mechanical mounting datum into a single substrate. Monolithic design can ensure perfect alignment via pins or perforations, reduces assembly time, and increases the ruggedness of the system.
3. Superior structural performance
Unlike glass, metallic mirrors can be ‘lightweighted’ through honeycombing without sacrificing structural integrity. Metals like copper provide rapid thermal equalization, making them the preferred choice for weight-sensitive and thermally volatile environments.
4. Complexity made simple
Our deterministic CNC diamond processing allows for the production of custom aspheric mirrors and complex freeform surfaces that are impossible to achieve via traditional grinding and polishing.
Our core manufacturing capabilities
Single point diamond turning (SPDT)
Millpond Optics uses Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) to shape metal substrates with nanometer-level precision. This process produces highly accurate parabolic, aspherical, and freeform mirrors directly from metal, eliminating extra polishing and ensuring fractional wavelength accuracy for demanding applications.
Precision CNC milling
Our precision CNC milling integrates mechanical features directly into optical components, including flanges, alignment datums, cooling channels, and lightweighting patterns. This allows for monolithic designs that:
- Reduce assembly time and costs overall
- Improve system ruggedness
- Maintain optical and structural precision
Standard and custom coatings
We offer a full range of standard and custom optical coatings to maximize reflectivity at specific wavelengths or across broadband VIS, NIR, and FIR ranges. Coatings can be optimised for reflecting only one—or maybe two—wavelengths.
Large optics
Millpond Optics is a market leader in ultra-precision machining of large-scale, high-quality metal optics (up to 700 mm). All geometries are available for large optics. From parabolas and aspheres, to complicated polynomials and NURBS surfaces.
Freeform machined optics
We provide tailored freeform optics designed for specific spectral requirements, delivering maximum reflectivity and minimal scatter. Using precision diamond turning and CNC machining, we can create virtually any shape, giving engineers full flexibility to realize complex optical designs while maintaining exceptional performance.
Millpond Optics – partner with us for your custom machined optics needs
Any shape you want
As a leader in machined optics, we understand that off-the-shelf components rarely suffice for cutting-edge engineering. Whether you require a single prototype or a production run of machined metallic mirrors, our engineering team is ready to assist. We work directly with your specifications to define the exact shape and focal requirements for your unique application.
Spectral versatility
Millpond Optics metallic mirrors serve as critical components in many kinds of sensing and imaging systems. Our mirrors maintain high surface integrity and reflectivity across a wide range of wavelengths. A multi-layer or dielectric coating may be added to the metal substrate to optimize for reflecting only one—or maybe two—wavelengths. Alternatively, it is feasible also to design coatings for a broader wavelength range.
Millpond Optics partners with engineering teams globally to optimize machined optics for manufacturability (DFM) across several key sectors:
- Remote Sensing & Space Technology: High-durability aluminium mirrors for satellite instrumentation.
- Automotive & Industry Automation: Robust precision machining for sensor and scanning systems.
- Bio-Analytics & Laser Science: Accurate focusing for specialized laboratory equipment.
- Other industrial and scientific purposes that require high accuracy and reliability.
